cooking for birds

blackberry suet squares

it's the day after valentines day with about 6" of new snow on top of the last snow. winter is everywhere around us still, so why are those mountain bluebirds showing up? do they know we have blackberry must galore for them to feed upon? do they even like blackberry must? i spread some of it in the tree limb the other day where the feeder hangs and haven't really noticed much action there.

yesterday afternoon i did observe a bluebird on the dinner bell outside. it was a picture perfect moment, that lasted until the camera was trained upon his blushed chest. and this afternoon there were three bluebirds in the apple tree where i spread the must. i didn't know they were bluebirds because their chests weren't that blushed orange. i knew they weren't jays, because they were without the familiar crested head and slim shape.

5 gallon pickle jar of blackberry must

about the same time again this evening, a bluebird hovered outside the kitchen window flapping his wings, apparently trying to get a read on what was happening behind the warm glass. he came by twice, displaying the same behavior. i think the jury is in... i do believe the mountain bluebirds are elated to find a supply of blackberry anything in this winter wonderland!

so i pulled up the bookmark for a site i found last week when researching suet. this was hands down the best site i found, regarding bluebirds and other cavity nesters. it's chalk full of suet recipes and other very useful information.

as is usually the case, i didn't have all of the right ingredients for any of the recipes so i winged it. i used some of our must, a bit of coconut oil and bacon grease, smooth peanut butter (since we had no chunky), ground up stale corn chips (i accidentally purchased white cornmeal instead of yellow corn meal at the store), chopped raisins and a bit of chopped dried apple, adding unprocessed oats until it seemed to be a good consistency, then spread it out on a shallow cookie sheet to harden in the fridge.
