Wifi & Location Report

Wifi & Location Report

Yesterday I tested WiFi Speeds in all locations under consideration.
Everywhere it came in at 2-2.5 megs down and 8-900k up.
By comparison the speeds at the main house are 1 meg down and 400k up.  :-)

The major considerations for location choices:
1) Access.  Many of the roads around here are impassable by normal vehicle or our bug out vehicle.  There are a couple places that are even scary on a tractor.  Our household solar electricity will be generated off of our bug out vehicle, so we can take it with us anywhere, so we need to be able to get it in & out of the location a few times a year.  Currently most of the roads have places that need serious attention due to cattle traffic in poorly managed water crossings.  Some of the best land would require massive road work before we could pass and that has elimianted most of our initial location considerations.
2) South facing slopes.  For food production and passive solar heating for the house.
3) Amount of Fencing Needed.  In order to share the land with the cows we will need to section off the area & sensitive access points from being trampled by cattle.  We hope to use Natural fencing methods as much as possible.  Think Greenbriar & Blackberry hedge rows and such.
4) Water Access & Hazards.  Using permaculture methods of water management we will be seeking to transform eroded areas and put the incredibly large amount of run off water to use in our food forests and possibly for purified household use.  So water features of the locations are very important.
5)  Money.  The less of it we have to spend on 1, 3 & 4... the more we'll have for building & growing.
6) Benefit to Future Generations.  We won't live forever, what's the likelihood that our improvements will be beneficial to others

Location #1 has serious water feature potential for good use and would also serve to regulate the floods that descend down the creek at the main house.  The biggest problem road/water/cattle erosion places are in location #1 and we feel fixing those places will be mandatory regardless of where we set up.

Sumac cutting at Location #1 is hold while we wait on delivery of a new chainsaw blade and adjustment screws that were lost while cutting willows away from the burn pit.  I did some rough measuring of possible house locations at location #1 and was a little disappointed with how much flat land there was.  Recently stoked by the realization that 15x4 foot pallets existed, I had momentarily envisioned a 30x30 structure using 16 of them... That ain't gonna work at Location #1.  Daydreamed a triangle design that may work there.  I need to flesh that out some more.  The location #1 annex meadow needs to be further explored for house location.

I timed the walk to location #2 at 16 minutes casual walk which was much quicker than I thought it would be.  I discovered that location #2 has a lovely view of the Interstate from most vantage points.  This is the opposite of what we would like in a view.  :-(   When the zombie apocalypse comes I envision the interstate to be a rather dangerous foot path with folks looking for supplies along the way.  I really think we'd be better off setting up out of site of passersby.

Continuing to look around the lovely area that is Location #2 I discovered another couple south facing meadows lower on the hillside that do not have a view of the Interstate.  That has become Location #3.  It is super thick with Sumac at the moment.  It will take a lot of work to see the actual lay of that land.

dig in to the side of the hill and build a sod house.

That is part of what we are considering. We are a little concerned about the ability of mostly clay soil to handle that kind of structure over time. It seems like we've stopped the location analysis aspect of this work for the time being, letting the knowledge we have sink in while we prepare new beds for next spring and try to keep up with harvesting.. paw paws, basil, hazelnuts, hickory nuts, walnuts, apples We found some wild grapes.. W is working on harvesting medicinal plants and busy reading everything about what the weeds around here can cure for us. I'm working on a passive solar heater that will be used to heat a storage building this winter and dry our harvest next summer/fall. There are so many tasks that could/need to be done. we just get up and do what we feel like working on each day. We've got many years of neglect to make up for on this land before we can really hit our stride.
